Tellus EDUCATIONAL TOOLS

What is tellus?

"Tellus” (which in Latin means "Earth") is one of its kind. It has been created by the Young European Farmers in co-operation with teachers and representatives of the farming world in all Member States. The aim is to provide an introduction to European agriculture in the context of the school curriculum operated in these various countries, in a way which will make learning enjoyable.

 Day of agriculture/ Journée de l'agriculture 2005

On the occasion of the Informal Council of EU Agricultural Ministers – on the subject of "the agriculture of tomorrow – a challenge for young farmers"- CEJA organised the "European day of Agriculture" in the schools of the 25 EU Members’ States. This “European day of Agriculture” is following the different communication activities of CEJA and “Tellus”, which is a teaching pack for schools of the European Union. On May 9th 2005, young people aged from 6 to 18 from the 25 Member States will visit farms, will work on Tellus, will take part in competitions on the theme of the future of European agriculture, will debate with young farmers on their profession, the future of the sector, and even such sensitive subjects as GMOs…

"As the young people have less and less contact with the agricultural sector, it is more and more important to communicate with them and inform about the realities and the roles of this sector, by developing direct contacts between young farmers and European young people". Mariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development

HIStory of TELLUS

Launch of Tellus

Three years before, 19 February 2002 at the European Parliament in Brussels, CEJA (the European Council of Young Farmers) announced the official launch, in the 15 countries of the European Union, of the educational kit "Tellus". This project aims to raise the awareness of primary school children concerning European agriculture. The event took place under the patronage of Mr José Maria Aznar, then acting President of the Council of the European Union, Mr Romano Prodi, then President of the European Commission and Mr Pat Cox, then President of the European Parliament. The Tellus kit explains the agricultural origin of products which are consumed or used in daily life, the great diversity of European agriculture and the realities of the farming world.
